June 10 To Jumperp and Slide 1st Stop about 15 miles northwest of VT on old Ryan road in open Yellow Pine forest. About 20 little aspen 3'-6" high seen in 200 yds. walls, 6 little yellow pines about 2-4 yrs old 4" high, some Oregon grape and a little very short grass. Ground is mostly bare except for brown needles. Mamm says the young aspens are not eaten till August & fall. In fall, cattle & deer eat the fallen aspen leaves almost entirely, & some curled oak leaves. A very few small locust shrubs are present. The yellow pines 1'-3' ft. high are stubbled & browsed. 2nd Stop Big Spring deer trap. The trap is a maze of individual lanes leading to the finest pens & chutes which are dark, & quiet this day. Big bucks are dehorned here & loaded. The cost is $5.00 to $7.35 per head, according to the number shipped. 3. Sample plot near deer trap along shift fence. The weed & grass growth is rank in the plot - outside very low & almost bare. The cattle are held below the fence until later summer when they are allowed to go upon the plots.
