Grand Canyon
May 9, 1931 Interview with Brooks
At the peaks there were probably
40,000 or 50,000 head of cattle in
the region. Then the cattlemen
set out to get the mountain lion.
Over a period of several years they
took off 600-700 hundred lions;
they say 1300, but the meantime
the Kaibali had been declared
a game refuge, so the deer began
to increase until the great number
reported in 1925.
Brooks thinks there are no more
than 16000-18000 deer there as
a maximum now. But the forest
service still holds to 30000. Over
5000 were taken out last year.
Brooks says the coyotes got
10% of the large fawn crop for 4
months last winter.
He stressed the point that these
barren canyon shoulders come from
a few deer being held there for
perhaps 2 months of the winter,
rather than being indicative of
tousands of deer. He thinks the
range is improving. He does not want
the park service to get any of the
winter nor intermediate range, but
wants some of the plateau summer
