Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif.
4:40 P.M. October 17, 1929
Trip made with George M. Wright.
Afternoon, clear & cold; sun low, light good.
I estimate 1500 fowl on lake; mostly
Pintail Ducks. Also many Mudhens.
Others seen: 2 Canada Geese
1 White Fronted Goose
1 Spoonbill
2 Canvas Back
2 Whistling Swans
Snow Geese (several)
1 Eared Grebe
Tied Bill Grebes (several)
1 White Pelican
Gulls, Calif. (many)
3 Ruddy Ducks.
All were feeding along shore, & upon
thesand where people were feeding
them grain, which the birds came for
without fear, & were as persistent
as domestic fowls.
Exceptions to this were:
The Whistling Swans, which were feeding
by themselves in the far (East) end of ✓
the lake.
The Canvas Backs were likewise
there. We had not seen these
