Thompson 102. Death Valley, Calif. Furnace Creek/June, April 15, '31 Interview with John Mills. Kit foxes abundant in the valley. Coyotes wander down occasionally. Mills say they are more numerous now since the hotel has thrown out garbage than in the past. He doesn't think they get any dams. A few Bob-cats may be up in the mountains around the valley. Rattlesnakes are exceedingly scarce. There used to be a great many near Rattlesnake Point (5 or 6 might be killed within a mile) but they are gone now. Mills has killed two near Furnace Creek this but this year, but has not seen as many in the region in the last 35 years. Antelope were never in the region. The nearest ones were in Nevada about 75 to 100 miles away years ago. No deer here either.
