Tompson 102. Primacles Natl Monument, Calif. Mar.3, 1931 This trip was made to see whether the Yosemite band of Zule Elks could be placed in the Pimacles. Mr & Mrs Wright, Mrs Dixon & I arrived about 4:00 P.M., & met Mr Dixon & Mr Hawkins (supervisor of the monument). The entire party drove up the west canyon, starting from the fee control entrance to traversing the newly acquired portion of the monument. Some willow grew along the stream bed, but rather sparsely. The area is not swampy. A little trickle of water was present but Hawkins said that it would not last long. There is very little grass. The area is mostly a dry chaparral canyon, not very suitable for Elks. If Elks were placed there they would need to be fenced in a paddock, feed & watered. Otherwise they would wander out of this dry area to more favorable spots - namely ranches.
