hompson Everglades (cont.) Jan 16, 1931 At Neetlake, we took a boat & rowed part way round the lake, rowing about 45 minutes, & returning at dusk. The lake was completely surrounded by mangrove. We saw a few Florida Gallinules, ordinary Cooks, [illegible] & one Rail?. The boatman had been in this region for 30 years. He occasionally saw coops & otter, but no flamingos. Returning after dark, we saw two Racasons, about 1 mile apart by the road side. Birds eyes showed like red flares in the car light. We saw one Chuck-wills-widow? in the roof. It flew out of our lights. Birds seen: 1. great blue heron - many 2. Egrets, snowy & American - few 3. Louisiana heron - many 4. Little Blue heron - many 5. Little Green heron - one 6.
