Lanius ludovicianus
(Loggerhead Shrike)
1.
April 11
Palm Springs, Riverside Co., Calif.
This morning I found a nest in a
Lania diverscata that contained 5
young. The nest was composed of
rather coarse twigs, and was about
3 feet above the ground. One of the
adults hopped off the nest to
a branch about 3 feet from the
nest. The young birds seemed to
be quite large, but their eyes still
were closed & they didn't even
possess a down covering. The skin
of each was almost black. Feather
pappillae could be seen over their
backs.
