the mail contract as there was no cargo to load. The town is apparently well built and the streets are lined / intersected by trees which add much to the beauty & contrast the sandy desert of the country. The Headland or Vorno is a broad hill which rises abruptly from the harbour & is well protected on its broad rounded summit. We did not go ashore nor did we see the high snow clad peaks of the Andes which are said to be visible from here. The whole coast line from Africa to Dentafagete and Deen is an extreme desert without any vegetation in sight. It is infinitely more absolute than then Mollendo which has a green belt some 20 or 30 feet above the seashore where the fog belt rests & deposits moisture in much permanent fog belt.
