"[illegible] flower is golden California poppy which is a shrub also. On the hill above the city is situated a park of cypress & pine trees also many eucalyptus & some olive trees. 31 Took the 12:30 P.M. train for Santiago & arrived there at 6 P.M. The day was bright with a fresh breeze it was very warm. The railroad extends thru the hills along narrow valleys highly cultivated by irrigation all tho the country hillside doesn't look very dry. The hill are everywhere covered by a scattered growth of small trees or better large bushes well separated & having the appearance of the acacia fields of Africa. In places many tall Cereus cactus were seen with the bushes grass was not very evident the ground being bare & stoney.
