L. 26. P. 21. keep the engine turning over for most of the day. Squalls + rain added somewhat to our troubles. Then Oct. 5. Did not quite make Madiri before dark & the tide set so strongly up- wind against us that we had to anchor & wait for the low tide in the small hours of the morning. Played the victrola most of the evening. Gordon, captain (retired from a sea-going clipper). and Twyman, missionary acting as chief engineer were in the boat! Gordon is quite a young chap & is in charge of his Cowling's plantation at Traders, but of course rents the Lordville for her. Mrs C. is now at another plantation of hers on the Island Milne at the south side of the mouth of the Fly. Fri. Oct. 6. Had breakfast ashore with Gordon at Madiri. We saw Miss Smith, missionary, whom we met this m way up last May. The other young lady missionary who was there is now married! She & her husband live across on the Barre river. Set the radio up + had a talk with Pat Inverly at scheduled time (9.50 a. m). Now we're crossing to the north shore to find a camp for Brose & Rand to stay for two weeks. Reached a long- known village called Waritodoro a bit after noon. Found the
