us. Three of them have been down to Dane, & we
worked our propaganda "bring birds + animals" on them,
showing them some specimens. Three of the men
spoke some Motuen. Their own language is simply
guttered.
Monday, Aug. 17. Shower last night. Today rather overcast. We
crossed over to look at the northwest corner of the lake which
offers fair possibilities for a actual camp. About 15 Suteis
came in 2 canoes to see us + a lively trade in
tory drums, bags, canoe paddles re soon developed.
They are well built people, wearing large white shells,
strings of conies, loin-cloth, armlets + anklets, and
have their plaits with grass into numerous tangles.
(See photos). We are cruising about the south end of the
lake at this moment, giving some of the Suteis a free
ride in the two dinghys trailing astern of us.
Tuesday, Aug. 18. This morning the finishing touches
were put on the camp; the radio went up! And about
3 o'clock the "Ronald S." sailed with Archbold,
Willis and Tublsted on her, leaving Healy, Bress,
Rand and me with six police and about 1/8 trap
to work the lake.
Had no traps out last night. Set
out quite a lot today, but pretty busy this poor jelly
organized.
About to catch lots of small bats - probably bat-allowance while
about army tree tops.
