Sunday, Aug. 9. Splendid weather. Talked to Dick on the "Pineda S." this morning - No news; they are coming steadily along; boat may stay for it days. Managed to get a few steps out last night. One Rattles near trader also a fine Greely, the latter picked up when the tree died on the ground. Crossed the river to the old airplane runway now swallowed in grass to see if any good for "jacking"; also spent the collecting word among the "puma kei" (local natives). Morning fair + pleasant; never falling; a touch of the S.E. wind. Plenty of locals. They all know the meaning of white folk since the Orville camp left only ten months ago, also two boys of the Alice River whom we brought up with us last May on the "Maria" have doubtless told them all they knew about us. The upset is that we have had plenty in already & they understand we want them to bring in birds or mammals. Some know even a few words of Whotun. This afternoon another Greely (a another species) and a small Dotzonia were brought to me. I think that if I have time enough I can pick up a good collection here & perhaps fill some of the gaps. Splendid weather all day. Work a trail to the NW, this afternoon, which is wide & relatively open; plan to go along it with a light tonight.
