that ship to recruit 5 Bamu river boys for the new census & then apparently came up the Fly to meet us. We talked to Archbold & Nicholson in the "train" this morning too, no news yet of Willis but he ought to get out during the next few days. Two more rafts built today. Thursday, July 30th. We were treated last night to the sight of large numbers (200 - 300) of great fruit bats or flying foxes streaming up-river in a northeasterly direction, most of them outside opposite the camp. They flew high; from 1/2 to twice as high as the forest, but one or two got a bit lower. They were too high for a shot gun but Rand made a good shot & got me with his rifle. The bullet struck a wing of the bat fell at the river edge. It was killed with eye-pick but proved extremely resistant. After it fell it uttered a number of loud harsh growing screams which caused one of its companions to circle over us two or three times. [illegible] [illegible]
