L. 20. P. 5. [illegible] arrived. They consist of the police sergeant and one policeman and 18 carriers. Though muddy from travel they did not appear very tired. They look to be in fine condition. Blue I took them for strangers and bit one of them. From Willis's letter which they brought I expect to need five days to get in to the mountain base. The packers apparently came out in three but they traveled light. I expect to go only a couple of hours tomorrow and get across the Black River . After that it is trail - and mostly bad trail. Thursday, July 2. Dusty. But the mist-drip did not commence to fall until 5 o'clock. It ought to clear up speedily.
