Transcription
bearing of 334° is part of Pare and represents
the approach slopes of Macpays Peak (Austin);
the single hill next, also marked 'a' corresponds
in bearing with the isolated conical hill
Mnt. Karik (Karrik);
[illegible] the long,
distant range, again marked 'a' is, I believe,
a part of the Dap Range; and the faintly
indicated distant range beyond Mnt Blucher
between 34° & 38° indicates the connection
of Blucher with the Dap by way of Mnt
Turgom.
The assumption is necessary in dealing with
Macpays's published work that the bearings
shown on his diagrams are 'true'. If they
were magnetic, and the bearing for the western
tip of Blucher were thus 16° 'true' instead of 20°
the ray from would in no place
approach the Palmer River closer than one
and a half miles, whereas it is clear from
his text that the views were had from the
river itself.
Taking the foregoing facts into consideration
I feel convinced that the Victor Emanuel
River was nearly Macpays was
equivalent to the 9000-foot Dap range with
