L, 17. P. 12 turned up, brought by local people before 2 october. Later a number of other bats including a new species of the genus Hipposideriz. Temperatures here range from about 75° to 85°. Twenty six mammals (of which all except three were bats). Friday May 29. Saw two medium sized bats this morning circling high up. One possibly shot by Rand. Fair day promised. Went up trail exploring the left bank of Sly R. Dont know exactly beds overlying sandstone, & across very recent gravel beds being recut by river. Small animal tracks in mud. Have theory of the general gelogy (of this area but will wait a while before setting it down... In P.M. cut new trestles from bridge of "first" creek down-streams. The boys came back very late; they said they had been fishing, consequently eleven un-skinned bats were waiting for them. When at 5.45 they got back to camp. If they caught any fish they must have cooked seated them out in the woods. They got the job of skinning the bats which took them until 8.30 at night. The natives: what the well-dressed man with wear -- a head-band, arm-bands, girdle-shell, leg-bands just below the knee. One fellow was dressed for some form affair: his chest & abdomen + calves were coated dull red; his body was ornamented in front
