L. 17. P. 7.
of Nyctimera, both females, so much smaller and
differently colored than no. 3264 that although
they also possess greenish yellow marks on the
wing digits & metatarsal I can hardly believe
them the same species. The extremely small size
1.5 mm. of the eye opening of the Dipposiderus in in
great contrast with those of Nyctimera (6.0) or Dobsonia
(7.0). Two Dobsonia were bought in today, and the
tail is suspended beneath the interfemoral membrane
by a septum-like membrane. The second wing digit
of Dopsonia is clawless but to the terminal
joint crooked. The larger of the two Nyctimera females
has the mammary well developed; the second one is
probably young.
It was alarming to meet a string of bushmen leading
for our camp this pm. Each carried a single small
article - one a warbler, a second a small
owl, a third a bunch of bananas, a fourth a
bat, or - all wanting payment in beads. Today
I offered a pocket knife for a cuscus - I use t
cuscus (their word simai) for any large animal,
as there is the only word I know. They
showed plenty of interest we shall see.
There is now no doubt of the two species
of Nyctimera. The female of the large one was
bought in a little before sundown.
