3 (2: 1) Anas superciliosa pelewensis Hartlaub and Finsch Common Duck Range.- All through Polynesia as far as New Guinea, Lifu Island. Description.- As in New Hebrides.- There is a certain amount of size variation. Australian birds (rogersi) are much larger than Polynesian bird. It is possible that Loyalty birds are intermediate in size. Habitat.- Rivers, lakes, sometimes on seashore. Collecting.- Fresh water birds on Loyalty Islands still insufficiently known. Shovelers (Spatula) and Pochards (Nyroca australis) are known from New Caledonia and might also occur in the Loyalties. A few specimens are sufficient for establishing the record.. No geographical variation is expected in these species. *SEE GAYLEY, P246 Nos 15.. NOTES { SEVERAL species of duck appear very occasionally but never stay more than a day or so. Natives who know N.C. Ducks say they are just the same as they have seen in N.C. In south near Medew they occasionally appear for a few hours or a day appear to be just resting then fly on elsewhere. (L.M.) Mare Is. has no streams or surface water suitable to ducks (L.M.) Natives say very occasionally a duck settles on the sea more shore (LM)}
