1991 Waltwd Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Blontwice HNHR 4 March *Gourp Leptate* ♂ turnover! ♂681. Last seen 21 Oct, gone by 1 Feb. →D.A. 11 Dec. ± 6 wks. Replaced by a new ♂NOBA. (85345) 13 April 1140. There are some stores left here, as well as at least a couple of birds. 19 May 1500. Still a few stores here and (!) a bird in the lower of the 2 old holes in the traditional nest tree! It has hatchlings! 2, in fact, along with 2 unhatched eggs, one of which looks opaque and the other possibly infertile. (This is from peeping; the hole has been considerably deepened.) Clutch size here was definitely 4 (shells in nest match the 2 hatchlings). 20 May 1430. Opened the hole, put in a parasite board, and set up an ambush. Now 3 babies + 1 infertile egg. 23 May 1115. Picked up the parasite board and measured the 3 babies: ① 17.5 ② 16.6 ③ 8.3. 3 June 815 Set up to get the ♂NOBA here at the nest. 900. ♂ in! But turns out the 2 holes are connected! Will have to try again later. All 3 babies still here, at any rate. 4 June 915. Trying again. 940. Got him! 6 June 840. Set up for the ♀ this time (DLW). All 3 babies fine. 920. ♀ here, but very skittish—apparently they know that the connection is plugged up with some foreign material. Moving on & will return. 1145. ♀ feeding, but no sign of the ♂, so I let her be.
