Melanerpes formicivorus

(3 June) 1015. Watched the birds (actually, I never saw more than
2) flycatching, mostly from the Hastings nest tree. They
occasionally flew elsewhere, but I generally followed them
and never got any hint of nesting activity.
7 June 115D. Still plenty of stores left here. Why no nest? Or,
perhaps more likely, why can't we find the nest?
!July 1345. Hung out here for a bit and checked holes, but
found no sign of anything going on.
30 August 1120. Checked around here; The birds are around, but
nobody in any holes.
Amazingly enough, they appear to have run through their
stores here: lots of shells remain, but virtually no potentially
intact acorns!
