1991 Walter D. Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Plague HNHE 31 May 1145. Still 4 eggs here. I vote for only 1♀. 8 June 1400. Babies have hatched mostly: 2 babies, 1 pipped egg, and 1 infertile egg: ① 8.6g ② 4.7g. Put in a parasite board. 20 June 1030. Went up to set up the ambusher only to find the nest completely empty! 31 December 1030. Counted stores: Main Tree (Plague): 1340) 2° tree: 2 { 1345 Others 3) Even the Plague tree is only partially filled, but they do have some acorns, at least. 4 April 1400. There are a fair number - not a lot - but a fair number of acorns remaining here. I'd estimate stores at perhaps ~500 still. 10 April 1330. Set out a feeder in the 2° granary here; this is a supplemented group. 1 July Jim reports that not only the Plague Lewis' Wpkr but also the School Hill Lewis' are here at Plague. They appear to be flycatching and eating dog food just fine, but as far as he could tell were not being actively encouraged (i.e., fed) by the adults. Note that their calls are very different from acorn Wpkers; adults do not seem to go for it after they've been out of the nest awhile. On the other hand, they're still here at least and also aren't being chased away by the adults. September Noticed a ground squirrel going into the traditional hole (in the 2° granary) while checking for nests here.
