1991 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus Hastings Reservation 17 June Went out with Elizabeth to chase after the School Hill floater (8'1917). Went over hill and gone. Started at Hanby's, walked up to Lambert Flats, and actually found the Found at 1545 Hastings: 44.5° (Griffins house) uncorrected Big Blue: 296° (un corrected) Oak Ridge Gate (Tassajara Rd Suct): 349° uncorrected bird at a little open site on the side of a ridge Got knows where except you could see just about everything. Interestingly, The site had several large trees and some! nice roost holes, but no group or granary; that is, he didn't just head back "home", wherever that may be. He still seems to be floating! The site was on a ridge with direct site to Hastings & Tassajara Corners. There was an open (buldze? ) circle ~10' in diameter at the site on the ridge. Again, we could find no granary in the immediate vicinity, although the site looks good for one. He's also by himself - there is no group nearby, best I could tell. There is a tree with several roost holes at the site, however, suggesting that a granary has fallen that used to permit occupancy? The whole search took ~2 1/2 hrs.
