1991 1992 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus School Hill West (14 June) roosted in the nest hole, however; instead, they apparently roosted in the other old nest hole (the low one, most likely). Could be worth an ambush. 15 June 1620. Still 3 eggs. Set up ambush at the non-nest hole. 16 June 440. Got the ♀; now ♂1998. Was the only bird in the non-nest hole; presumably the ♂ was in the nest for a change? 20 June 855. Hole still has the 3 developed eggs, but they're cold and I would not be surprised if they've been abandoned. Now watching for an hour or so. 955. No sign of any life here. 24 June 1500. Removed the 3 eggs, still cold and in the nest. No sign of life here; ♂ apparently abandoned. 1992 2 January 1600. No stores or sign of life here. Note, however, that the knothole nest has fallen and is no more. Doche shade. *Group no doubt abandoned fall '91 * (Probably abandoned earlier - 1 July). 28 April 1430. Bird flew out of the tree here, presumably from the low nest hole. Check ASAP! 30 April 1430. None in hole. Checked it: in good shape but empty. 8 May 1000. None in the hole, but 1 bird flushed from the area. 15 May 815. Bird flushed from the hole! Better check it again! 18 May 1535. ♂ in hole. Watching. 1640. ♂ still looking out! Gave up & checked the hole: 4 eggs
