1991 Walter D Koening Melanerpes formicivorus Finch HNHR 21 April *Group Update* Looking at Amy's notes, things have obviously been confusing in this area all winter. It seems clear from Amy's records that the 2 birds from Road Warrior (81641 and 91552) were in the area all winter. They most likely even stored some acorns at Road Warrior, even though they spend most of their time in the Finch area. 91552 was last seen by Amy on 13 Feb, and not seen by Roger on 30 March (D.A. 7 March ± 3 wks). 81641 seems to have replaced an unwanted ♂ at Finch, also between 13 Feb-30 March. Meanwhile, 91627 was at Finch (the Sycamore granary) all winter, apparently with a ♀NOBA who was then replaced by 81641 (see above). The 91627 died last week (found by Morrie), and it's possible that 91823 from Wolfpack is thinking of replacing here. But otherwise only 81641 remains at Finch. Now the real mystery. The Finch Valley Oak granary was quite full this winter (it's now empty): Who filled it? Amy's notes suggest some activity in the VO but do not specify who was hanging out there. Roger saw a NOBA pair there on 30 March. It's unlike Amy to have missed a pair of birds like this, although things were obviously messy here and it is possible, I suppose. On the other hand, she never really reported anyone else there either. So, I'll just have to guess that there was a NOBA pair here this winter (group BONGO).
