1992 Walter D Koening Melanerpes formicivorus Westgate HNHR 23 April 938. Checked the low vertical hole in the sycamore here, where I'd seen activity this morning, only to find 6 babies! They were not even hatchlings - I'd guess they're 5-6 days old. Only 1 was markedly smaller than the others. There were no eggs in the hole. 1 July 1440. There are some, but not a lot of acorns remaining here. 16 September 1700. Opened a new hole high in the sycamore after having seen a bird in it twice today, but the hole is empty. I also fixed the higher hole in the snag, whose cutout (beside the limb) had fallen inside the hole. (This is not where they've nested recently.)
