Melanerpes formicivorus
Westgate
(3 May)
(namely ♀1415, ♀1473, and the ♀NOBA) have moved here. Meanwhile,
I can only presume that ♂1571 & ♂1688 have switched to Gate.
(My guess is that both the helper ♀♀ here are gone as well.)
As for nesting, they're interested but not there yet. Not
clear which hole they'll use either.
6 May
1500. Climbed and opened the road hole; not an easy job.
It is empty, however, as expected, given that they're
still in holes all over this tree.
8 May
705. Watching.
710.♂ 8-wm #1582. ♂♀ R/M #1473, presumably.
♂♀ R/Y-D? #1415
725. 4 birds together. No sign of the former helpers.
750. Bird (♀) in road hole. ♂Mv/Yellow #1585 there also.
815. No real sign of the ♀NOBA today. Birds definitely have
acorns remaining here, by the way.
820. ♂ in hole (road) again; ♂1585 at hole.
824. ♂ in hole throwing out woodchips. I think this will
be the hole and that they're close, but not today.
830. Raining! Going home. I don't think we've missed this one yet.
*Group Update*
♀1571 & 1688, who have been toying with the idea much of
the winter, have finally committed themselves to Gate as
of early this month at least; say Moved → 15 April ± 2 wks.
Note that they left for an inferior group, were clearly not
kicked out, and the only rationale for leaving is to avoid
apparent incest with ♂1582 & 1585.
They've been replaced by ♀♀1415 & 1473 → Moved here 1 May.
