1991 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus MPHF (30 April) My guess, based on $1533's late egg yesterday, is that nobody laid today and that we're talking a break before starting again. (It's possible, even likely, that $1533 has laid a full clutch already (after all, I know she's laid 3 eggs at least). See compilation (with some mate-guarding) on the back. Note that I actually saw a copulation! 1 May 630. Back again. 815. What I know happened is that: both $♀ spent time in the hole. (same one as heir); while $1531 was inside, $1533 went in and tossed a runt egg; $1531 remained inside but did not toss anything; only the (runt) egg was laid today. I infer from this that $1531 laid her 1st egg today (a runt) while $1533 is still refractory. However, $1533 tossed the runt egg even while $1531 was in the hole - a first as far as I can remember. The only real alternative is that $1533 laid the runt egg and tossed it herself, after $1531 had ample opportunity to do so. This doesn't seem likely, especially since I know that $1533 was laying up until 2 days ago & a runt egg by her at this point would be extraordinary. So: $1531 laid (runt) → tossed by $1533. See back for my compilation & some mate-guarding data. I again saw a copulation! And some mounting. See back. 1400. Checked the nest hole with the eggs from 3 days ago - egg is still there, quite cold.
