1992 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes formicivorus UPHF HNHR (9 May) 110D. Nobody's returned to the suspect tree, best I can tell. Maybe they haven't started yet after all. 1715. Bird in hole! We got it! Must have eggs still. 12 May 1500. Opened Hole: 3 eggs; 2 opaque (incubated at least several days), 1 not developing, apparently. 20 May 1900. 2 babies, 1 unhatched egg. Wts: 13.5; 12.2 gm. (≈3 do; hatched ~17 May) (5.1285 in nest) 1940. Watched roosting here: 3(285) (8M/2-W(N)) roosted in the nest by himself. 3 June 2000. None roosting in the nest, presumably at least in part due to Stanback's T implants. Bird in hole when Val arrived to roost watch 1 July 1500. No stores left, best I can tell. 25 August 1400. Opened the spring nest, where there are 3 babies! ① 51.6 (28) ② 53.2 (30) ③ 53.0 (27) [≈13 do Est LED=1 Aug] This group has not been supplemented since 15 July, but may have been given some food... But note: There are some blue oaks already dropping acorns right nearby - could these early trees (many of whose acorns are largely damaged) have prompted this? 4 September 1130. Banded the 3 babies here. (See capture records for measurements).
