Beaver Creek Wildlife Management Area, 10 miles NE of Canon City,
Fremont Co., Colorado. Elevation 6100 ft.
June 19-23 goldfinches if the river walk did not. This dashed my hope of
(CA) collecting a nice topotypical series. They recommended I
try a place not far from town to the northeast, Beaver Creek
WMA, a wildlife study area with promising-sounding riparian
habitat just beyond roads end. Following their directions, I
reached the area from Canon City via US 50 east to County
Road 67 to County Road 123 to County Road 132. The county
roads traversed mostly overgrazed rolling plains with scattered
Spartia ereti, with pinyon-juniper savanna and woodland as
one traversed County Road 132. I arrived at roads end about
10:00. Weather en route was partly cloudy, about 70°F. Verte-
brates seen en route were:
Amphibians: Bufo sp. -1
Birds: American Kestrel -2
Mourning Dove -25
Burrowing Owl -1
Horned Lark -6
Scrub Jay -1
Black-billed Magpie -3
Common Crow -2
Plain Titmouse -1
Canyon Towhee -2
Vesper Sparrow -8
Dark Sparrow -12
House Finch -20
Meadows: Zapus Californicus -3
