Jules J.A. 1991 Yellow-breasted Cuckoo Coccyzus americanus South Fork Kern River Wildlife Area, between W of Walden and Gr. California Elev. 2500 ft. July 18 In the grass riparian growth (all eyes red or dead), below Stephen Jayson near the W limit of the riparian woodland area, I found 5 cuckoos today. This "subgroup" barely equals the number known for the remainder of the valley's woodland (7). The population here, one of the less in the state, is in serious decline, too. July 18 Stephen Jayson confirmed the presence of at least 5 cuckoos at the far W end of the riparian woodland, and found our nest with 2 young, which he shares one in the varying rays of sunlight. The further lies fairly over defined the territory limits of a second pair. The nest itself was a rather poorly constructed platform about 7"s feet up in a small cottonwood overlooking an unnamed "railway" running NE-SW through the woodland. The sides of the grass were visible at nests edge, & with some effort the outlines of the birds could be seen through the bottom of the nest, reminiscent of windowpanes in the mind; the branch supporting the nest described a considerable arc, but the young birds seemed quite unaware. We did not linger long, for Stephen said the adults are feeding them out at very frequent intervals.
