Shrew J. 1992 Journal 22491 Willow Drive Palo Cedro Siskiyou Co. California Elevation 500 feet. March 25 Bob and Kathy Hanson kindly consented to my setting birds on their sub- unborn property in southern Siskiyou Co, in an area of oak woodland and occa- sional prades. In this hilly area, the large Quercus dominated the hilltops, and the slopes and low spots have deciduous oaks 20-35' tall, 8-18" dbh, trees spaced 5-20' apart. There are scattered manzanitas which also grow in one substantial clump in the yard. There is some green grass/ fat cover of the soil. Down slope from the back of the house, just beyond the property fence line, is a 50 x 70 pond c an 8' high brush pile in the middle of it. The oaks have mostly budded out and some flowers are also visible. There was a dry creek about 3/4 mile SE of the property. A crude map: x - rough indication of location & density of deciduous oaks -- NET LOCATIONS 5 100 ft -> I set up my nets at 06:55, setting out my Jaded birds before them in the usual fashion. There were lots of lesser goldfinches about lots of singing & chasing, some birds seemingly already in pairs. My netting success was steady throughout the day.
