Texas, Jan. 1991 Journal Santa Fe km River Wildlife Area, 3 miles W. of Nelson, Kern Co., California. Elevation 250 ft. July 9-11 weather was dry, F. Stave was surprised & delighted to see 7 these (only) additional birds in habitats he had considered insufficiently grown up. I caught one goldfinch at 10:45, and wrote the rest of the day. The wet prairies seemed perfect - starred spots near wild flower fields dominated by red sunflowers, with very little wind to disturb tan nets. At the end of the day, I drove home. Weather July 11 was virtually a carbon copy of yesterdays, except there was almost no wind all day. Cloudless skies, temps 55-85 F (due to lack of wind, it feels considerably warmer in the sun). Species list from Santa Fe km River (most water birds from L. Isabella) Inspirations: Bufo boreas Hyla regilla Sceloporus sp. Reptiles: Diporcephalus dorsalis Cnemidophorus tigris Salpogopus occidentalis Thamnophis sp.
