July 3-6 I ended up writing in Gallup from June 30 to July 3 because what I thought was a wheel bearing problem was really an axle problem, and parts had to be shipped from Amarillo, Arizona. After picking up my car at 10:00, I loaded my vehicle and left Gallup at 10:50 via U.S. Highway 666 northbound. I stopped in Toketee to visit another former Juni resident, Fa. Ferencz, then continued north to Shiprock, where I picked up U.S. Highway 64/550 and drove west to Farmington. In Farmington, I called Glenn P. Nelson, San Juan County's long-time resident expert on bird distribution in northwestern New Mexico. At his suggestion, I explored Berg Park & B-square Ranch in Farmington along the Animas and San Juan rivers, respectively. The number of goldfinches were disappointing. Nelson also recommended Simon Canyon, a BLM natural area east of Farmington near the Navajo Dam on the San Juan River. I reached
