June 26-29
I opened my four nets at 05:20 - 05:30, and I caught my
first goldfinch at 06:05. By 07:00 I had caught 11 lesser gold-
finches. One I goldfinch way preyed upon in the net, its
head eaten off. The same (or a different) predator killed a ♂
Bullock's Oriole and partially ate it in the mist net. The
partially eaten birds were discovered in two same net at two
same time. Having 12 birds to put up, I closed my nets
and spent the rest of the day, save brief stretching episodes
just outside the door, inside my work tent.
The weather June 26: calm at dawn, until about 07:20; then
intermittent 5-10 mph gusty southe until 09:30, after which there were
steady winds for remainder of the day, mainly out of the S, but
shifting around from SE, ESE, & occ. SW. Four thunderclucks today,
two passing close by but no rainfall here. Temp. range 60-85°F.
Still windy at sunset, but less so than last night.
