June 23-24
Cañon City, Fremont Co., Colorado, Elevation 5332 feet
Weather this evening was notable for E winds 10-15 mph,
gusts to 20-25 mph. There were a few scattered clouds and
the temperature was about 75° F.
On June 24, I did get up as early as I had intended, so my nets (two) were not opened until 06:20. I concealed myself behind some Virginia creeper and watched my nets. And watched my nets some more. Despite little wind and well-shaded sites, and the mid-rod high placement of caged june birds, I caught only one yellow warbler and two starlings in 70 minutes. I heard no goldfinches. Since the wind out of the east picked up at 08:00, I decided to give up. While taking down one net, it fell off a pair of lesser goldfinches flew into the other net; the female flew back to him, bounced off the net, then perched tantalizingly on the shelf string. She fled before I could get into position to try to flush her into the net. I took my one tapestop out of the net, attempted to recede it, killed it, and took down my net. I put up the specimen at the driver's seat of my vehicle. No species was noted this visit that was unrecorded on my earlier visits few days ago.
The weather the morning of June 24 had temp range from 55° F to 65°, with many clouds. E wind, 08:00 5-10 mph, E higher gusts.
Travel Day
June 24 I left Cañon City, Colorado, heading to Clayton, New Mexico, at 10:30. I took a 50 mile detour by continuing E on US 50
