These animals all died due to a fulminant sarcoma, evidently infectious, as the disease spread to adjacent rooms separated by screens. This is the verbal report I got from Diane Burger, D.V.M. at the Office of Laboratory Animal Care. They died over the course of several weeks between late August and October, following the addition of more birds from Central Texas, added this summer. Birds indicated as "dead" were dissected by KAC personnel. Most of these birds were necropsied, and the bodies treat- ed with phenol, thus most of these birds were salvaged as alcoholics.
