August 9 Lock sparrow Hooded Oriole (crick) Black-throated Sparrow House finch Song Sparrow Lesser Goldfinch Red-winged Blackbird House Sparrow Anemone: Striped Skunk-DR Spermophilus variegatus Iapys californicus Odoriscus Ammonius Eularigus sp. Pahrangat Valley from Hiko to Lower Pahrangat Lake, Lincoln Co., Nevada. Elevation approx 3500 feet. August 10 I woke fairly late this, at 06:15, then breakfasted, finished yesterday's notes and birds Camp, to go to the Pahrangat Valley. I got moving at 07:30, made no stops in Meadow Valley Wash this morning. I drove west on U.S. Highway 93 at Caliente. At Oak Springs summit, the divide between the two drainages, there is a fairly crisp botanical break, leaving juniper savanna behind for Joshua tree/grassland to the West; trading Mojave Desert, leaving Great Basin (though Meadow Valley Wash runs south to the Colorado River; it is not a Great Basin drainage). South of Hiko, US Highway 93 turns south into the Pahrangat Valley, but I turned north on Nevada State Highway 318 and drove the 5 miles to Hiko. I then reversed my route and continued south on Hwy 93 through the small towns of Oak Spring and Ramos to Pahrangat National Wildlife Refuge, using mostly a frontage road I picked up around Oak Springs.
