TROCHET, JOHN 1990 Journal 43 Lower Table Rock 7 miles N. and 3 miles W of Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon. Elevation 1300 feet. July 26 creek. Against the creek bank grew a few 50-60 ft willows, the only ones here. In this area grew the largest oaks, largest madrones and largest Oregon ashers. Where large limbs have fallen, creating light gaps, thick tangles of wild rose and wild grapes, the latter ascending in pieces into the trees. The largest ponderosa pines grow here, tops surging above the broadleaf canopy. I moved my camp today to the margin of this woodland. My camp is about 150 ft - 280 ft above the agricultural/dairy farm fields to the E. and S. These goldfinches were most numerous in the area of the oak woodland, seen flying to and from this to the brushland-grassland uplands. I saw a flock of six lassoors at dusk, the first this trip as found as single birds. I saw the nets cleared all day. I tried swaying this evening, briefly, and without success. Both early and esp. late, the mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and gnats were all bad today.
