Trachet, John 1990 Journal 40 Lower Table Rock 7 miles N. and 3 miles West of Medford, Jackson County, Oregon. Elevation 1300 ft. July 25 - I arrived here from Grants Pass at 16:00, taking Table Rock Road north out of Medford. About 1/2 mile past the bridge over the Rogue River, Table Rock Road makes a turn to the left. It turns right (north) again in about 2 miles, but I went straight at this point, through a gate and onto a dirt road traversing eastward through agricultural fields to the east slope of Lower Table Rock, about 500 yards beyond the gate. Lower Table Rock is a mesa with basalt rim rock on its east slope. My map says it tops out at 2044 ft. elevation, and my camp is 700 or 800 ft below that. The vegetation has a "California" look to it, with the grassy/weedy ground cover all dry from a summer of sun and little or no rain. The trees visible from here are some Douglasfir high up against to E. Rimrock and closer to camp are oaks, ash, ponderosa pine and medium trees. Understory is thick under the oaks. More about the habitat tomorrow when I am less tired.. In addition to plain tutunear, acorn woodpecker and ash-turated flycatcher make me feel closer to home. Weather this afternoon; temp about 85°F, with NE winds about 5mph. No clouds. Species list (birds only): turkey vulture acorn woodpecker red-tailed hawk downy woodpecker mourning dove m. flicker
