TRACHT, J. 1990 Journal 32 July 17 Willamette Valley, from Eugene to Corvallis, Oregon red-winged blackbird purple finch (Coit) W. meadowlark house finch Brewer's blackbird American goldfinch grass-leaded catbird house sparrow July 18 North Bank region of Columbia River from Wascoval to Vancouver, Washington July 20 I spent the morning talking with Ray Fitzsimmons (until 03:45), then slept til 09:00. We resumed visiting until 13:00, when I left for the lower Columbia River to look for goldfinches. I spent the late afternoon looking for goldfinches in the area between Wascoval and Vancouver. This seems to be the extent of lesser goldfinches known range in Washington. Aside from a vocal fly-over in a shady-bordered grassy field off Highway 50 just west of Vancouver, all goldfinches found were Americanos. I certainly found too few to collect. I then began to drive north to visit my grandmother near Skilton, and my car ran terrible. In a rural Holden, I stopped at a Chevron station with "medic on duty" - a maybe 18 year-old fellow. He told me I had an electrical problem and could get no parts until Monday the 23rd. I decided to limp home, when I can get service tomorrow - providing I get there. The weather today was clear and breezy-to-windy. Temp 70-75°F during my time in the field, with 10-20 mph W. winds.
