under National Wildlife Refuge 3 miles SE of Alturas,
Under Cr. California. Elev. 4355 ft.
July 18 Unlike last year, when I saw the classic "target" rash and
(Coit) began treatment prior to developing symptoms, I feel quite ill.
The fourth course of antibiotics was too chem. This I finished
about 60 hours before departure around 11:30 this morning.
I drove from Sacramento to Under NWR via Reno, Nevada, where
I picked up U.S. Highway 395. I arrived here at 17:30. It is
now almost 19:30, and as soon as I finish these notes, I
will leave for the Willamette Valley of Oregon, via Klamath
Falls and Wicamette Pass.
This refuge is at the confluence of the north & south forks
of the Pit River, on the western margin of the Great Basin high
Desert. I briefly visited or scanned over several habitats
here: lakes & ponds, meadows, big sagebrush hillslopes,
and a riparian cottonwood grove SW of refuge headquarters
across the railroad tracks.
The weather this afternoon was quite pleasant. Temperature
about 75°F, SW breeze about 5 mph, widely scattered cumulus
clouds.
