June 8 I arrived here at 10:00 and spoke to Mike Fleming, the
park wildlife officer. He had not yet acted on my application,
but gave me a verbal go ahead if the local population was
large enough to sustain my sampling scheme. From the
Pleasant Junction Headquarters, I drove to then thoroughly
explored on foot, the following areas: Dragon Wells, Rio Grande
Village, San Hail Ranch, Cottonwood Campground, and in
the Basin area, the cabin area, the campground area, and the
upper Window Trail. This last place was unique in
having several goldfinches conspicuously present. There
were, however, too few to meet my needs, and I did no
collecting here.
Weather today: ground still wet from rain yesterday,
but skies clear until about 14:30, partly cloudy until 17:00,
then thunder showers until after dark. Temp 80-85 F; winds
mild & variable 5-10 mph except near thunderstorms, one
of which produced a fierce wind I caught (I hope) on film.
