June Indian Reservation, McKinley Co. New Mexico
May 25
I arrived here at 16:45, having driven from Sacramento via California State Highways 99 S. and 58 E., then E. on Interstate 40 to U.S. Highway 666, S. to Arizona State Highway 61, E. to the New Mexico State Line, whereupon the road became New Mexico Highway 53, which traverses the June Indian Reservation in an E <-> W direction.
In the 3 1/2 hours of daylight remaining, I cherry-picked among my favorite places along the reservation's riparian corridor. I spent about an hour below Blackrock Dam, scanned Blackrock Reservoir, made a fairly quick tour of the NW corner of Blackrock Bosque, then drove to the larger impoundments on the E. side of the reservation: Nutria Reservoir, Nutria Lake #3, Nutria Lake #4, and Nutria Lake #2. Elevation range 6358 feet - 6800 feet.
All habitats are quite dry, even for this dry time of year. Blackrock Lake is little more than a puddle, and its only source of water below the dam is a trickle draining down from Blackrock Bridge. Nutria Lake #3 is dry, as is too E. half of Nutria Lake #2. The W. half of Nutria Lake #2 has water only in a small area near the dam.
The weather today was glorious. Temp. 80 F, with cloudless skies. Winds W.-S.W. about 15 mph, less at the approach of sundown.
Species List (only birds seen):
Pied-billed Grebe - 1-BD, 4-BR, 6-NR, 2-NC#4, 2-NC#2
Eared Grebe - 17 (should be ten times as many.)
