Survey of Rio Grande Riparian Corridor from 6.1 mile NW of Presidio, Presidio Cr., Texas to Terlingua, Brewster Co. Texas and Rio Grande Village, Big Bend National Park, Brewster Co. Texas.
August 18 are beneath some of the cottonwoods. Other years goldfinches (can't) have been thick - not this year. I found (mostly just heard) about 10 birds. I visited the area @ 17:10 - 17:55.
Weather - clear with a few scattered clouds, until BBNP, where thunderclouds were prominent over the Chisos Mtns, and another mountain range to the NW. Temp 105-115°F, about 105° in Big Bend. Light SE winds X in Big Bend, where winds SSE 5-15 mph.
Species list:
Warps: Turtle sp. - 2, dry wash Cnemidophorus spp. - many, widespread
Birds: Great Blue Heron - 1, dry wash
Turkey Vulture - 50, throughout
Red-tailed Hawk - 1, dry wash; 1-Terlingua
Gambel's Quail - 2, 3 mi NW Presidio
Killdeer - 1, Rio Grande Village
Upland Sandpiper - 1, 3 mi NW Presidio; 1 in about 2 mi S. Presidio Gap.
Rock Dove - 5 in Presidio
White-winged Dove - 10, Alamito Creek; 10 others in scattered 1's & 2's.
Mourning Dove - 100, some just about everywhere.
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 3, dry wash; 1 Rio Grande Village.
Black-chinned Hummer - 15, scattered places.
Oregon-fronted Woodpecker - 2, Rio Grande Village
Jabber-Jacked Woodpecker - trills & all scattered singles.
W. Wood Pecker - 4, Rio Grande Village
Black Parakeet - 2, Alamito Creek.
