TROCHET, J. 1989 Journal 28. Bluewater Lake, McKinley & Cibola Co., New Mexico. Elev. 7400 ft. August 16 Cream Horn - 12 W. Meadowlark - 4 (Crit) N. Barnbird - 75 Vesper Sparrow - 20 Mountain Bumble - 7 Clipping Sparrow - 2 Madrone Ponds and Rio Grande River, 5 mi S. & 1 mi. E of Dolan, Valencia Co., New Mexico. August 17 I visited this upwmin area from 06:30 to 12:30. This portion of the Rio Grande floodplain, like most of the middle Rio Grande in New Mexico, is found on both banks by rivers. This area is reached from the Over road on the E. side of the river. The gallery forest is composed of Fremont Cottonwood, a creper species of willow, Russian olive and Tamarisk, a kit less grow-up than Blackrock Bridge. Understory vegetation, in concert with fallen branches, makes the going slower than in most gallery forest settings generally. The Madrone Ponds are two small lakelets ornamented by emergent vegetation. No open water is visible on the S. pond, and only a little on the N. Pond. Each is about 2 acres in extent. The river itself is an intermittent trickle at the moment here. Weather this morning: Clear, no wind, temp. 75-78°F.
