Bluewater Lake, McKinley and Cibola Counties, New Mexico.
Elevation 7400 ft.
August 16 I visited this lake in the last 75 minutes of daylight or
anyway to private eyes. This is the largest lake in the semi
Mountain region, fed by Cottonwood Creek to the SW and Bluewater
Creek on the SE. The grassy/brushy flats of the Las Vegas Valley
border the upstream W. end of the lake. P.T. serves bound the
lake N & E, S, and on the E. the lake is impounded by the dam
at the top of Bluewater Ridge. Lake levels fluctuate markedly
from year to year, and from season to season within a year,
generally falling substantially through early and mid-summer,
sometimes into autumn. There is little marginal emergent
vegetation as a result. I canned the lake diving dirt roads
along the S shore, rode traversing short grass and brush.
The lake level is down about 50ft from full, and is now about
1 1/4 miles long W->E. When full, it extends another 1/2 - 3/4
mile to the W. Visited from 18:45-20:00, unaccompanied.
Weather mostly cloudy & windy, E W winds 10-20mph, except
wind direction variable near thunderclouds. Temperature around
60 F.
