Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, 3 mi N & 6 mi. E. of Roswell, Chaves Co. New Mexico
August 3 This refuge occupies the west side floodplain of the Pecos River NE of Roswell, New Mexico. Its area is a series of ponds surrounded by gravel and dirt roads, the water margined emergent vegetation and on the E side of the ponds, a fair growth of Tamarisk. There are a few scattered large cattmarcks. Tall vegetation is scarce. The best stand of trees is around the boatquarters area. I visited this refuge the last 45 min of daylight. There were few clouds, light SE winds, < 5 mph, temp 85° - 80°F. Now I'm headed home for Renee's birthday party Aug. 5.
