Alfalfa Fields along US Hwy 285 SE of Carlsbad, Eddy Co., New Mexico.
August 2 A week of persistent rain & wind at Washington Road (& here, for that matter), which renders mist net use impossible. I explored fields SE of Carlsbad along US Hwy 285 for migrating passerine-perching shrubbirds. I checked about 25-30 alfalfa fields on the SW side of the road about 3-4 miles SE of Carlsbad from 18:15 - 19:15. As far as shrubbirds are concerned, I could have quit after 4-5 fields and missed no others. Yellow Sandpipers were almost all in one partly cut alfalfa field, with one seen found in uncut and completely cut fields.
