1989 Walter D Koenig 1990 Melanerpes formicivorus Gazebo HNHR 26 March Observed 4 birds roost in a new hole in a Valley Oak along the fenceline (with lots of poison oak, by the nest box). Ambush is set up and ready to go for the morning. 27 March 630. With 1 disaster, I had an otherwise very successful ambush and caught 7 birds at the hole, including 9653, 8718 (both wanted for DNA sample), 91415, 81416, 91493, 81643, and 81644. The disaster came in taking the birds down- 81643's leg got mangled (definitely broke) when the bag got catched in the figure 8 while repelling down. Bummer. Otherwise he was OK, however, which was pretty lucky. Only 91642 was missed; perhaps she's not there? 3 May 1000. Bird in hole in middle Valley Oak (old nest tree). Checked the hole: 4 fresh eggs. 1 August 1800. Lots of acorns still stored here. This group's storage facilities strike me as being intermediate in size-less than Lower Haystack's for sure; probably on the order of Hay-Bloris. 1990 9 January 123D. Counted stores here, coming up with only 2326. This is fewer than I'd expected, but nonetheless I think it's pretty close, and I'd put capacity here at only ~3000. I also flushed 7 birds from here when I arrived. 15 April) 91415 at School Hill power struggle this morning. (16 April) " " " " at 1010. 19 April Cleared out a starling nest (+5 eggs) from the knothole in the nestbox tree (high up; needs a rope). 28 April 1135.8 in lower low Valley Oak hole.
