1989 Walter D Koenig Melanerpes fuscicollis Blomone HNHR 22 March 1930. Ambushed the hole in the granary facing straight don't tonight, nabbing all 4 ♀♀ in the group (♀1325, ♀1459, ♀1648, and ♀1649). Unfortunately, a 5th bird came by (presumably ♂1167) but he roosted elsewhere. 6 May 1240. Set up at the nest for ♂1167. 1345. None interested. I'll have to try again later. 7 May 1140. Trying again. Both ♀1325 & ♀1459 have fed. Also ♀M/M 1649. 1300. Giving up. No sign of the ♂ yet. 8 May 545. And again. 645. He finally came-Monofilament messed up! All for now. 1340. And again. 1530. I think a night ambush is called for. ♀♀1325,1459, and 1649 are all here in abundance (note, though, that I've yet to see ♂1648), but not the ♂. 13 May 415. After giving up on all that stuff I waited a few days for the babies to get a bit older and then, this morning, ambushed the nest before dawn, nabbing ♂1167 as hoped. I bled and measured him and then blocked him back in the hole until the 1st vestiges of dawn hit about 430. 1 August 1800. As far as I can tell, these guys are entirely out of stored acorns.
